Accessibility
Brain Bell is for everyone
We aim to meet WCAG 2.2 level AA, so that people with visual, hearing, motor, cognitive and learning differences can take part on equal terms.
What you can do
- Accessibility settings (the person icon at the top of every page): light, dark and high-contrast colors, three text sizes, wider letter and line spacing, and reduced motion. Changes apply at once and are remembered on your device.
- Read aloud: every question has a button that reads it out using your device's own voice.
- Extra time: when a host turns it on, any player can ask for double time on timed questions when they join. It is a private choice; everyone else sees only a small "Extra time on" note.
- Sound: sound is never needed to play, can be muted at any time, and is off by default on phones.
- Fair scoring: a host can turn off the speed bonus, so that nobody is penalised for taking longer.
- Keyboard and switch access: everything works without a mouse. Ordering uses Move up and Move down buttons, so nothing needs dragging.
- Screen readers: questions, answers, scores and countdowns have text labels. Focus moves to the new heading when a screen changes, and feedback is announced.
- Not just color: answers are marked with letters, and correct answers are labeled in words as well as color.
- Zoom and small screens: text can be enlarged to 200% and pages reflow without sideways scrolling, down to 320 pixels wide.
- Any language: quizzes can be written in any script. Right-to-left text is shown in the right direction.
How we check
Every release is run through automated accessibility checks on the main pages in light, dark and high-contrast colors, and through keyboard and small-screen tests in Chrome. Automated checks cannot find every problem, and we have not yet tested with screen reader users, on every browser, or had an independent audit. If you hit a problem, we want to hear about it.
Known limits
- Live countdowns are visual and announced by screen readers only when you ask for the time. Use extra time, or ask your host to turn the timer off.
- Read aloud depends on voices installed on your device, so quality and language support vary.
- Many quizzes are written by their hosts. We cannot check that those are accessible, but the editor encourages short, clear text.
